Cuts Like a Knife

Am I the only one who’s noticed the return of regular, stainless steel knives to airplanes and airport lounges? At first, it didn’t register, then I began thinking, "What’s up? Have we officially won the war on terrorism? Are we no longer worried about terrorists using these potential weapons in nefarious ways?" And we can now tote scissors, as long as they are of the plastic handled sewing variety.

So, who is responsible for this particular stroke of genius? TSA? The individual airlines? Homeland Security? Each of these entities already has enough image and reputation problems to fill one of those new Airbus 380s many times over.

So, can someone please wake-up and bring back those plastic knives and reinstate the no-scissors ban. Scissors are scissors and plastic knives may not cut as well but, hey, that means they may not cut as well. Get it?

  1. Steve, I’m with you on this one. Utter Doul- the 9-11 hi-jackers accomplished what they did with simple box cutters. With enough will and determination, plus the element of surprise, they could certainly hi-jack a plane with an entire knife! And I’ve used those little plastic scissors- they’re not the best in the world, but they’re scissors none the less! Let’s get real! These terrorists are clever, cunning and not afraid death.
To me, that sounds like the plastic knives should make their return ASAP. It is fantastically irresponsible to do otherwise.

  2. Generally I find myself in agreement with what you are saying but on this one I have to differ.
I really don’t think that these sort of implements make an effective weapon, but granted can be used in a street fight or domestic violence kind of scenerio. But in this post 9-11 world, do you really think that a bunch of guys weilding scissors and table knifes can hijack a plane?
I personally wouldn’t think twice about rushing a guy weilding one of these on a plane. The chances of him actaully getting a vein or my jugular are small; sure he may do some damamge but nothing that wouldn’t heal. And like I said, in this post 9-11 world, I am sure almost every able man, and woman, would rush would-be hijackers.
Furthur, I think that this whole ban on nail clippers and safety razors and what have you is more to make the people (falsely) think they are safe rather than to deprive would-be hijackers a weapon. And I am sure that they never did or never will allow hunting knifes or Rambo \ Croc.Dundee style blades on board.
